Georgia sucks

The local watering hole is choosing family. Tonite may be my last chance to go to an adult establishment and act as if I 'm around adults. The owner was there last night and normally I speak to him but I couldn't. I kept thinking, no matter what I say it's gonna come back to his decision to make the place a family joint. It's funny, the best quote I've heard in a minute was in the AJC today, "If they can drink beer at Chuck E. Cheese, then I should be able to smoke in a bar." How friggin true is that?!?!

I really wish I could post about something else but right now I am truly pissed off at this. Hell, it took an hour and a half before I spoke to Sammy (a manager). I said my goodbyes last night but I'll probably go tonite and smoke my ass off as close to the non-smoking section as I possibly can. I plan to spend Friday looking for a place reasonably close to the house where I can enjoy a smoke WHILE I sit inside....if I can't find one, I plan to boycott restaurants and bars as much as possible only going to please Mrs. Xpinionated when necessary (and to watch football games but I may go and just not drink in protest!!!).

Passing as News 6/29/2005

FOXNews.com - U.S. & World - Holloway's Mom: Dutch Dad Hiding Something

Seriously, for such a 'grief-stricken' mother, this woman has released more interviews, press releases, and press statements than Tom Cruise over the past two weeks. I don't mean to trivialize her situation, but as I mentioned last week, I'm disgusted by the way 'supposed' victims seem to tan in the limelight lately.

So you mean to tell me that the fact that she thinks the father of someone arrested in connection with her daughter's disappearance (which I have issues with but maybe I'll touch on that later) is hiding something is news? That's the state of journalism now? Duh....we'd expect him to hide something. The kicker is when the mother states that she will remain on the island to 'see what happens'. Hmm, Alabama. . . Aruba. . . Alabama. . . .Aruba . . . .

Once again, I don't mean to make fun of the true tragedy here but this mother's constant voice in the press has truly made me a little lless sensitive to the case. It's sad but at the same time disappointing on a few levels. For example, why is it you can rarely find an article talking about how she was abducted? From what I've read previously, she got into a car with three dudes she didn't know at a club. For an honor student, there is some common sense missing there...this is not to say she deserved what happened to her in any way...no one deserves that type of fear and trepidation. I'm just pointing out that she did do something that could have possibly prevented the entire situation.

But I digress...This is not news, the mother's statements should no longer be news. Especially since it almost seems that she's doing it just to keep in the short attention span of the media....

More on the smoking ban

Yes, I still do not know what the local watering hole is going to do. It really does piss me off that they haven't made a choice. They recently attained pool tables which makes boring nights there that much more entertaining. They may think their family friendly environment is the way to go but remember those nights where the only customers still in the joint are 1) smoking and 2) drinking alchohol. In a business whose money is based largely on alcohol consumption, I hope they think long and hard before making the 'sentimental' choice.

I know of one bar in the area that has already said it will allow smoking but it's a Mexican joint and that's not my thing. I would always be hungry there. Plus, I don't like having to start over and build my reputation as a regular up again. Plus, I highly doubt that they are a true sports bar so I wouldn't be able to see Lakers games like I'm used to.

I find it odd that the government can issue a smoking ban on public places and the term public places includes private property. The bars don't receive any local, state, or federal funding so how exactly are they 'public'. They are private properties owned by private citizens or business. Just as a police officer can do nothing for you in an accident in a bar parking lot, nor should the government be allowed to tell bars what the clientele is and isn't allowed to do.

Mrs. Xpinionated is in favor of the ban and thinks that the ban will cause me to quit smoking. What she doesn't seem to grasp is that I smoke because I enjoy it. Do I plan to quit? Yes, I have every intention of quitting, but right now I enjoy it. I go to Jeffrey's (the local watering hole) for three reasons (during non sports season - Baseball is not a sport): 1) I can smoke in peace, 2) I can hang out with the closest thing I have to friends, 3) I like bars, that bar in particular.

All these non-smokers say things like 'why should I have to breathe in your smoke'. I guess for the same reason I have to watch where I walk in a bar because your non parental ass isn't watching your little careless rugrat as they run roughshod throughout the joint! They say things like they will go out more often now because of the smoking ban....chances are you won't go out anymore often than you did before. Secondly, if you're so worried about your health and the health of others, perhaps we should close down restaurants serving food that doesn't fit a standardized healthy diet law, or maybe restrict to less than obese people only. Screw civil liberties and personal freedoms, it's all about political fuckin'friggin' correctness (an 'excuse my language' goes out to my parents and Pastor Bill - by the way Pastor Bill, here's your shout out....go visit Pastor Bill here.

I keep hearing all these stats about a majority of the population favors a smoking ban. Funny, I wonder if a majority of bar patrons favor a smoking ban since those are the ones that will be affected the most. Screw it, perhaps I will only patronize 'adult friendly' establishments starting Friday. And I think I'm gonna have a smoke fest at Jeffrey's on Thursday in protest if they decide to go non-smoking.

Ugh

So next week this time, my Local Watering Hole has a decision to make. Thanks to a law banning smoking, they have to decide who is more important to them: their smoking and drinking adult clientele, or their family-friendly business.

Quite frankly, I'm pretty disgusted with the number of children I see in my LWH on a regular basis. Parents whine that there are fewer and fewer choices for them to go out to eat...

1) You could maybe help the whole obese kid problem by fixing a healthy meal at home...if you have time to drive out to a bar, eat, sing a little karaoke, and head back home then you have time to cook.

2) There are tons of places with nonsmoking sections long before the freakin' ban goes into effect. Don't give me that fewer choices garbage.

3) Bars aren't meant for kids. No matter how much you may want to remember your 'partying' days, your kids shouldn't be in bars....ever. You chose to have kids so live with the decision, both the shortcomings and the gifts (which I imagine should outnumber your unwanted presence at the bar).

4) How long before legislation comes along that says I can't smoke on my patio, in my car, in my garage? Bars are bars. They aren't clinics. They aren't places folks go to decide next week's community events. They are establishments intended for adults to relax. No coloring books...no little screaming rug rats breaking video game machines though they have no money.....just cash paying adults!

Let's hope the LWH makes the right decision. I have few places where I completely feel relaxed and few outlets for that relaxation seeing as most of my former hobbies are becoming boring.....if my LWH switches up on me...there's no telling what I will do.

Need Clarification

Is the MVP trophy that Duncan just received for the entire playoffs or for the championship series? Because if it's for the championship series, Manu Ginobili should be the one totin' an extra piece of hardware. Tim Duncan played horrible for most of the Detroit series. Hell, even Robert Horry has a weak claim to the MVP award, especially considering he was coming off the bench to save arse.....I'm going to assume that the MVP award is for the entire 2005 playoffs and not just the finals....but I'm almost certain he will be referred to as the 2005 NBA Finals MVP...disgusting....

CNN.com - Luxury store apologizes to Oprah - Jun 22, 2005
Oprah is "hopping mad" that a luxury store denied her entrance at closing time. She claims had she been a white celebrity, they would have undoubtedly let her in. Let's dig deeper:
1) Would they have let me in at closing hour? And further more, would Oprah think that my denied entry was worthy of talk time on her show? Doubt it. Heaven forbid, the world treat a celebrity like a regular Joe....er Janet. I mean seriously, the store's employees have been there all day working. The last thing they need is some high falutin' celebrity to come up and act as if she owns the world and deserves special treatment. If you knew exactly the kind of watch you wanted to buy, why did you wait until closing time to pick it up, oops my bad 15 minutes after closing time. Waaaaaaahhhh.....

2) Oprah, most of your core audience can't afford to shop where you shop so who are you really trying to influence with speaking about the incident on your little show? Let it go, use the medium for something positive....

3) When I can finally afford it, I'm not gonna shop at the store. Not because of Oprah's whining....nope, because the store apologized for being closed. They close at 6:30....she got there after that....end of story.

Missing Teen's Mom Suspects 3 Men Held | ajc.com

Missing Teen's Mom Suspects 3 Men Held | ajc.com

Is it me or or people who are seemingly going through tragedies lately are awfully quick to soak in the limelight? I mean, if my child was missing, the last thing I would be doing is interview's for some morning show. Not only the Alabama teen's case, but even in the case of the runaway bride, the 'distraught' family and friends seemed pretty damn willing to get on the tube. It's just hard for me to understand how someone who is so devastated could so easily pop up on Tv everyday, or with a quote everyday, or granting interviews as if they have done something heroic instead of been victim to a tragedy.

Different mindsets I guess.....

Further Proof that Baseball is not a sport

Kansas City Star | 06/21/2005 | Old ballgame has newfangled twist

You're going to let some folks play a videogame to determine the first two innings of your 'real' game. The sad part is that the videogame portion will probably be tons...tons more exciting than the actual baseball game.

The Wifey, The Lady, and stuff

The Wifey. I miss Mrs. Xpinionated. She's been out of town since Friday. It's weird, I was looking forward to having the house to myself and re=living some bachelor life but by Sunday I was pretty much over it. I need supervision.

The Lady I think I am going to stop torturing myself by looking at Dodge Magnum messageboards, mainly this one. I just don't see where all these folks get all this money to modify their cars. There are things I want to do to the Lady Magdeline de Magnum but I really don't see it in the financial cards.....

Stuff. There's no stuff...don't know why I put it here....

No Lockout

Whew! It looks like an NBA lockout has been avoided with the owners and players coming to an agreement to be announced later Tuesday.

I still don't agree with the minimum age limit being set at 19 but I'd rather not see what a lockout would do to an already deteriorating fan base.

Phil's Back

I'm still putting my hands around the recent acquisition of Phil Jackson as the Lakers head coach. On the one hand, anything, and I mean absolutely anything, is better than the public relations-coaching strategy nightmare that was Frank Hamblen. And Phil has his ties to the organization, he has the basketball knowledge, he has the star power, and he can handle the Lakers pressure unique to being a member of that organization.

I think the only thing that stops me from being considerably happier (note, I am happy about this, but I could be happier) is the way in which Phil departed last year. Would he have released his book (I have read his book and though there are remarks about Kobe, Phil has remarks about many folks including coaches, refs, and other Lakers players, none of which is easy to argue against) had we renewed his contract? The book seemed like a well intended kick (not just at us, but primarily us) while we were down after losing the NBA finals (on this exact date 1 year ago). And if it was, then we have some things that I hoped have been ironed out: 1) What spurred the need for such a well timed and well-intended kick? and 2) Have those issues been fixed/remediated?

I think I will have a more concrete stand on Phil's return after I see what he does with our personnel in the upcoming draft and remainder of the off season.....

The end of an Idol's career

In the debacle that was the end of Mike Tyson's career, he did what was probably the classiest thing that he has in his entire career. He stood in front of millions of people and simply said 'My heart's not in it.' He made no excuses. He simply retired.

The disgusting part about this wasn't the ten dollar cover I lost when Mike didn't make the bell for the seventh. NO, the stomach turned in watching people who undoubtedly were cheering for Mike at the beginning of the fight, cheering against him at the end. People who were yelling, he's a loser in life and loser in the ring....These people were the ones with whom I was disgusted. For his part, Mike is responsible for most of the negativity in his life and most of his problems are a direct result of his actions. But to his credit, Mike has kept a relatively low profile outside of the ring for the past few years and has shown a level of maturity in doing so. As far as a loser in the ring, he performed as most boxers do at the end of his career (although through a bit more freakish ways), slumping....

Mike Tyson will always hold a special place in my boxing heart.....

Burden of Corporate America

Once again I'm burdened with an aspect of corporate America that has plagued me since early in my career. No, not the lack of corporate 401k matching. No not the lack of corporate sponsored community events. No, not the glass ceiling if there is one here (not really trying to find out). No, none of these are the cause making my arse so tender....Alas it's the coworker who thinks he's funny but in far too clear-cut reality, he's not. Not even giggly funny. More annoying. I've learned to not look at him directly when he passes my cube to avoid the comedic attempts but I still hear when others fall victim to his joke homicide. Ah well, what to do, what to do?? Tolerance is my only option I 'spose.......

SI.com - Writers - Arash Markazi: L.A. fans fed up with Shaq - Thursday June 9, 2005 1:16PM

Finally, an article that spouts some sense!!! For the past year, since the Big Fat was traded I have informed folks of the Lakers offer that he turned down that would have kept him the highest paid player. FOr the past few months, I've continued to emphasize that the only person still in a 'heated' fued is the Big Crybaby. Please read this article, it explains my hatred for this overgrown, over-the-hill (just about), fragile, media doll (except for this article). The only thing different about me from these other L.A. fans is I started disliking him just about the day after the trade....once you leave the family . . . . .

Hopelessness

So let's recap:

Our first round pick from last year is looking at doing a three year bid.
Our starting runningback, who makes millions, is being a dead beat about 20 grand.
Our coach has yet to show a single nugget of testerone since his return.
And we continue to sign folks such as Kevin Dyson who hasn't played since. . . . .2002?!?!?!

And ya wonder why I'm looking forward to college football season a little bit more....

Decisions

Should true Lakers fans be giggling? Do you think Jerry Buss has a bit of a smirk on his face? Hopefully not, hopefully they are better people than I am. Less vindictive, less hating....

But I am ridiculously happy at the outcome of the Eastern Conference finals. Is it haterade? Perhaps, but I remember a time when you could dislike a player and it was just your opinion not some stigma on your character. As far as I am concerned, Shaquille O'Neal is proving once again that his success will always be dependent on someone else being able to score with him. He may be the most 'dominating' but his dominance ends in the final 2 to 3 minutes as it always has. He may carry a team a good ways to the promiseland, he's never the one driving through the gate, he's always on the passenger side taking a nap!

Call me a hater, call me a Kobe Lover. Call me what you will. The fact of the matter is I Love the Lakers. I love all that is Lakers. If you leave the Lakers, especially the way the big fraud did, you are entitled to all the pent up wrath and frustration, insults and disrespect, and hate that I can muster. This is passion!
