Numero Uno

1st in the Western Conference.  It feels right.  This is what the Lakers organization is about.  This is where we are supposed to be.  Now to finish the deal.

It looks like we'll be facing Dallas or Denver in the first round.  We went 6-1 against those teams combined going 3-0 over Denver and 3-1 over Dallas (though all games seem to be a battle at the end).

I have never really been the kind of fan to prefer to meet one team over another.  By so saying, it indicates a fear of the less preferred team.  I do not like fear.  I like to think, nay, I know we can beat any team in the league in a seven game series.  Perhaps I'm blinded by the Purple and Gold, but if so let me remain in that manner.

My main concerns going into these playoffs:

  1. Consistency:  Save for last night's undressing of the Kings (which five years ago would have been a victory to be relished), the Lakers have shown a tendency in the second half of the season of building big leads and losing big leads by crunch time in the fourth quarter.  That cannot continue.
  2. Health:  Both Kobe and Fish are playing through injuries with Luke Walton and Pau coming off recent injuries.  Though we are a deep team, we must be weary of the injury situation.  Add to that no timeline for the return of Baby Boy Bynum or Trevor Ariza, and our health concerns are not minor.
  3. Lastly, assuming Baby Boy Bynum comes back, jelling and working him into the offense during the playoffs could be a tricky scenario.  Combining that with not knowing how the young man will react or play (aggressiveness still there?) after his first major injury poses some logistical questions for the Lake Show

In any case, getting out of the first round is a must, plain and simple.  The 48 - 17 finish means nothing if we get goosed in the first round.  The Pau Gasol acquisition means nothing.  And the number one seed means nothing.  Perhaps a regular season conference crown is big for the Hornets, or Rockets.  But to teams like the Lakers or Spurs (yes a measure of respect is being granted here), conference championships are but a sidenote to the title.

He's still a rapper?

The 39-year-old rap performer was arrested Thursday night at the couple's Wellington home in South Florida. Police said his wife called 911, saying he had kicked and hit her during an argument over buying a bedroom set. She later told deputies he had only pushed her.

Again, as seen in some other posts I've made (of which I'm too lazy to find) about the media's tendency to ensure rap is associated with as much negativity as possible, Vanilla Ice who has one successful rap song (which in actual hip hop circles is still debatable -- like calling the Super Bowl shuffle rap) is identified as a rap performer in a story about domestic abuse.  It's sad really.  Vanilla Ice, 18 years removed from a successful rap song and attempts at everything under the sun from heavy metal and acting to reality star(used oh so loosely) and current bull riding contestant on some celebrity (again used oh so loosely) CMT affair, is still considered a rapper. IT would be different if he at least had a current album that someone outside of his immediate family purchased but his current moneymaker is bull-riding on CMT.  So REALLY, the story should say 'The 39-year-old bullrider. .  . .'.  Alas, that will not happen.  Since Brokeback Mountain', cowboys have been really sensitive about their image....

Digital Irony

A study of World of Warcraft players aged 12 - 83 has found that after some violent gaming, the players were actually more relaxed or tired than aggressive.

"There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game as opposed to experiencing anger but this did very much depend on personality type," said Jane Barnett, who headed the Middlesex study. Translation: If you're an aggressive jackass before you play a video game, you'll still be one after; and video games don't magically turn peaceful people into violent offenders.

Hopefully, more studies like this one will make it to the mainstream media so every violent outburst doesn't fall at the feet of gaming.   I dare wager that the same could be proven of music and other forms of media.  Though, these forms of media do effect us, the foundation for violence toward others is built on something more than an album, video game, or shoot 'em up movie.

Steve Nash - Hypocrite

"If it stopped the way it is, I think Chris Paul has been outstanding and his team has been the top of the charts," said two-time MVP Steve Nash.
"It's the team, your impact on your team and what you do overall. Let's face it, he has been unbelievable. His scoring, his assisting, he's a leader in steals. He shoots a good percentage. He put his team on his back in the fourth quarter. That's what it's about. He doesn't have the players around him that Kobe has."

Funny that Steve Nash should say this considering he won the award twice with superb talent around him.  A bit of the pot calling the kettle black ain't it...or should I say eh?

That's My Baby's Daddy .. . . and granddaddy

An Australian couple has come forward admitting their incestuous relationship including the birth of two children, one of which died on congenital heart problems.  The other child is now nine months old.

The 61 year old father/grandfather has been having relations with his 39 year old daughter since they fell in love back in 2000 after 30 years of separation.

A judge has ordered that they stop doing the nasty and also given them a fine for their 'behavior'.

Oddly enough, I don't even have a funny joke for this.   It's kind of disgusting, well not kind of, it is disgusting.  On the other hand, it's been eight years since they started so they may 'love' each other but I still think there is a huge psychological research project here just waiting for the undertaking.

Down the wire

It's coming down to the wire in one of the greatest playoff races in recent NBA history.  The Lake Show has locked up it's 55th (out of 60 years) playoff appearance and now focuses on getting a better seed.  Right now, the teams I don't want to play in the playoffs are Golden State, New Orleans, and to a lesser degree Houston.  I'm not talking matchups here.  I'm talking bad feelings.  I just don't feel good running into those teams until we are on all cylinders.

With Gasol back in the lineup, it looks like we are starting to play to our capabilities rather than to the level of competition.

I fear Kobe may once again be shunned in the MVP race if the Hornets lock up the one seed.  It truly is a shame that the best player in the league has never one the award.

I must give Lamar Odom his proper props for Friday night's game.  I've ridden him quite hard for a few years so when he has a night like he did against the Mavs, it's only right I at least mention it.  Keep it up Lamar, love the way you play when you're relaxed in the third option role.

Who would have thought we were in for a 50+ win season when this roller-coaster began?

Stephen King on Video Games

Stephen King recently wrote an article at EW.com concerning his take on violence and video games spurred by a Massachusetts' bill that would ban violent games from being sold to anyone under 18.

What really makes me insane is how eager politicians are to use the pop culture — not just videogames but TV, movies, even Harry Potter — as a whipping boy. It's easy for them, even sort of fun, because the pop-cult always hollers nice and loud. Also, it allows legislators to ignore the elephants in the living room. Elephant One is the ever-deepening divide between the haves and have-nots in this country, a situation guys like Fiddy and Snoop have been indirectly rapping about for years. Elephant Two is America's almost pathological love of guns. It was too easy for critics to claim — falsely, it turned out — that Cho Seung-Hui (the Virginia Tech killer) was a fan of Counter-Strike; I just wish to God that legislators were as eager to point out that this nutball had no problem obtaining a 9mm semiautomatic handgun. Cho used it in a rampage that resulted in the murder of 32 people. If he'd been stuck with nothing but a plastic videogame gun, he wouldn't even have been able to kill himself.

Amazing

This fatherhood thing truly is amazing.  I can't see how any man would not want to be around his child.  I can't see how any man wouldn't do anything for his child.  My son can bring me out of a funk with a simple smile or shout, both of which are just as likely to occur at any random moment.

This morning he introduced a new game showing his mischievous side.  When I'm in the closet searching for another extraordinary Xpinionated outfit, lil Man will either come in there with me or close the door.  He used to close the door and just wait outside.  This morning though he closed the door and all I heard was the pitter patter of little feet off to do something they inevitably weren't supposed to be doing.  So I turn the handle to let myself out and those some pitter patters come back in a blaze.  He peeks around the door, smiles, and shuts it.  And again, pitter patter.  Back and forth we go, shut and run, run and smile and shut.  Until finally, he opens the door and I throw a shirt of his head making him giggle but also giving me time to get out of the closet (the Logo channel would be so proud!).  Things like this can make any ordinary day something a bit more special.

For the last three nights, he has decided he is ready for bed.  He lets us know by grabbing one of our fingers to take us on a journey.  We say, 'Devin do you want to go up up?'  Meaning are you ready for bed and he leads us to the stairs.  Now this isn't to say that he doesn't still fight the sleepies but the fact that between 8 and 9, he knows it's getting close to counting sheep time.  He probably thinks since he has more freedom upstairs since we let him rummage in a couple more rooms than we do downstairs, that if he can just get to the cusp of freedom things will be just as he likes them:  just out of sight of us but not so far that he doesn't know where we are.  But we think, if we can just get him to sleep........we usually win......for now.

Shout out to VT Softball

image Virginia Tech's softball stepped up to the plate Wednesday night and defeated the US Olympic softball team 1 - 0.  Rock star Angela Tincher doled a no hitter to the U.S. in ending the national team's 185 game winning romp through pre-Olympic exhibitions.

Daddy's new camera and new favorite pics

So we bought a new digital camera as ours had four solid years of service, and coincidentally 4 megapixels of resolution.  Needless to say unless you're not a digital cam fan, that is nothing.  Today's average camera is at least 7 megapixels.  Anyway, we were torn between buying a point-and-shoot camera or a dlr camera.  At first, somewhat encouraged by keeping up with the Jones' so to speak, we were leaning toward the DLR camera....you know the one that people take classes to properly learn.  Then, in January, I stumbled upon an article about the forthcoming Fujifilm s8100FD.  I liked what I read and decided that it was more of an advanced point and shoot which should suit us nicely.

Anyway, long story short (and because the experience with the scam artists Broadway Photo.com continues to piss me off anytime I think of it), here are my early favorite pics:

Random Thoughts

The Lakers are again at the top of the West tied with Houston at 46 - 21.  Pau Gasol is out indefinitely and Bynum is expected back by the first round of the playoffs.  If Ariza can come back as well, the Lakers would be at full strength but would still need a couple of games to gel and play together.  There has been concern that Kobe, Pau, and 'Drew haven't played together yet.  I'll put it like this:  Pau gelled with the team almost immediately playing out of position.  There's no reason that bringing young 'Drew back to a team he's played for at the positions he plays should be a huge cause for concern.  A bigger concern may be finding a way to make sure that the bench players that have stepped up during our bouts with injury don't lose focus like V. Rad.

Check the following from Charley Rosen (whose book about the 71-72 Lakers is a great read) when asked which two players he would take from today's NBA to build a team around:

That's easy.

Kobe Bryant, because he's a better shooter and defender than LeBron James, and can easily play both wing positions. Not to mention Kobe being one of the game's greatest clutch performers.

Tim Duncan, for his versatility and his championship-attitude. TD is a jack-of-all-trades and master of every one.

Kobe and TD would provide an inside presence as well as an outside one — and would enable a team to play inside-out basketball. Having them both on the floor would also discourage defenses from double-teaming either one.

There's no other possible combo that comes close.

Big win at Dallas last night though we almost blew a 21 point halftime lead.  image These are the kind of games where you don't know which team walks away with the most (besides the win of course).  Do the short-handed Lakers realize the accomplishment of coming out with a victory over a playoff bound team or do they realize they lost all but 2 points of a 21 point lead?  Does Dallas hang their heads for losing to a team missing it's two big men or do they realize that each of their past two losses could have gone either way?  I don't know.  But in the competitive West right now, the win is all that matters.  I'll let the Zen Master put together the mental gymnastics!

Congrats Houston on your run!  And bigger congrats to those happily living in Lakers land knowing our streak is still THE STREAK!

Possible New Tattoo

clip_image001

I am thinking about getting this tattoo on my back.  I have been going back and forth about whether I want to get another tattoo.  If I do get this one though, it means I will need to get a tattoo for every child we have, if I want to be fair and not show favoritism.  Whatcha think?  I may add 'Lil Man' above or below it....

Same Difference?

From an AJC story regarding the removal of the ad valorem tax:

Most Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the legislation. However, Rep. David Lucas (D-Macon) warned that lawmakers might wind up starving state coffers by cutting taxes at a time when the population is increasing, along with the need for services.

"You've got to fund state government," Lucas said, "and state government runs off money, not water."

Uh, Mr Lucas, this is Georgia...we ain't got no damn water either!!!

First Black President

As I'm sure everyone this side of Europe is aware, Barack Obama has gained an explosive amount of momentum in his quest for a Democratic Presidential nomination.  Unfortunately, I think a lot of folks, should he go on to win the presidency, are misguided in their thoughts concerning what a 'first black president' means.

If it does happen, it is without a doubt a great moment in history.  Years of struggle have led to this potential monstrous historical event.  An Obama presidency would provide validation for several people in terms of how far this country has come.

To my dismay, though, I fear that an Obama win may be misleading on two counts.  I fear that too many blacks will be voting for Obama simply because he is black.  I voted for Obama as the nominee but not because of his race.  I have a very simple tenet in voting, I try to vote for somebody but I find I am usually voting against others.  In the democratic race, something about Hilary Clinton rubs me wrong.  I think I would have respected her more if she had stood up against Bill Clinton.  Now don't get me wrong, and this sounds hypocritical, I am a Bill Clinton fan -- at least during his presidency.  My reasons are purely selfish, my life seemed more affordable and less stressful when he was in office.  But for Hilary to stand by her man in the situation he got himself into, though somewhat noble at the time, seems like a very politically motivated move in hindsight.  And someone who would use their marriage as a political maneuver doesn't inspire trust from me.  I didn't want to vote Republican simply because the past eight years have not left me with a good taste in my mouth, kinda like Lewinsky.

Secondly, there are few examples in history where a U.S. president single-handedly changed the world.  Perusing the internet I'll see comments suggesting that a change is gonna come for my black sistas and brothas out there because now there's a black president.  It's not going to happen.  Nothing happens in a vacuum.  Obama will still have Congress, the Supreme Court, and state Governments to deal with.  Checks and balances -- learned it (or at least memorized it for the test) in high school.  Along these lines, we also have the possibility of unrealistic expectations.  If Obama wins and if the change that black folks (an undefined change by the way) expect doesn't occur, will that tarnish his legacy.  Worse, (and this goes for Hilary as well), will the unfulfilled expectations provide ammunition against the next black or women candidate.  'Well ya see what happened when let one of 'em in office last time' motto will become rampant.

What initially made our form of government great is that leadership was elected based on common values, beliefs, and ideals.  Far too often these days, elections are driven by party affiliations and money.  And that makes it a bit difficult to vote and feel particularly confident.

For the record, I will likely vote for Barack should he win the nomination because a fresh outlook is what I think our leadership needs right now.  If he doesn't win, I can't say for sure that I would simply vote Democrat for the sake of party affiliation.  Just can't do it......I kind of wish there was a black woman running so we could get the 'firsts' out of the way!

Still no worries

It had to come to an end.  The Lakers ten game win streak came to an end last night with a 119-111 loss to the Portland Trailblazers.  It was one of those games I kind of felt was coming.  The way the Blazers played us earlier in the week showed a lot of heart.  And they did that on the road so this definitely had the feel of a caught-off-guard game.  Add the return of the Blazers court general Brandon Roy and 4 straight losses in the Rose Garden, there shouldn't be too much surprise with the outcome of this game.

With that said, the only alarm that goes off in this loss is the amount of points given up.  119 is a big number even in today's higher scoring NBA (when compared to the less talented 90's).  The defense should be fine come playoff time as the talent is there to play defense, it's just going to be a matter of wanting to give it 100% on both sides of the floor.

More on Campus Shootings

CNN has allowed readers to respond to the campus shootings at Northern Illinois University yesterday.  Of course, as with the Virginia Tech tragedy, the gun advocates are taking this opportunity to promote their cause.  They say if the average citizen carried a gun, the shooter yesterday would have been shot long before he could fire so many rounds.  They throw out the cliche 'If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."  What these advocates fail to see is that this shooter and the shooter at Virginia Tech did not obtain their guns illegally.  In fact, it was so easy for them to attain their guns that no one even thought twice about these individuals wanting to have so many guns.  In effect, the legalities that allowed these killers their weapons is actually part of the cause of both of these tragedies.

The next argument the advocates proliferate is that campus shootings are on the rise because they are known to be 'gun free zones' giving perpetrators a heads up on how much resistance will be faced.  This may be true to an extent.  And increased security in every public place is infeasible and in my xpinion not desirable.  Still, allowing everyone to carry guns would only escalate violence.  Consider the number of assaults that occur on a daily basis, in bars, schools, wherever.  Now imagine those assaults occurring with citizens with guns.   Instead of a fistfight and a night in jail, you've got wounded people, including bystanders (unless we're assuming that once every citizen carries a gun, their aim will be dead on accurate), property damage and a feeling exactly the opposite of security.  I wouldn't feel safe knowing that everybody around me had a gun.

What about the predicament our police officers would be put in?  They already have to take great precaution to ensure that a simple traffic stop of a driver is not a violent situation.  Imagine that same incident knowing that 90% of the population is strapped.

Then there are those that say it's not guns, it's our society.  Our society of "CSI", "Law and Order", and violent video games has propagated a culture of violence.  This is just a cop out.  These media outlets are not watched solely by serial killers.  We all watch these programs.  As such, if these media outlets exert such control over us all, why haven't we all gone the route of mass killings?  That's akin to saying that the kid that played the robber during a game of cops and robbers grew up to be larcenous.  Silly.  Indeed, there is something deeper to this recent outbreak.

I think these killers have been around since the beginning of time.  Some never kill, never act on their violent thoughts.  Others dwell on them but don't erupt until the opportunity presents itself.  I think the main reason we hear and see it more often now is twofold.  One side is that weapons are easier to obtain, whether legally or illegally, and generally much more powerful and sweeping.  Automatic handguns, rifles, and machine guns whose output would have been unheard of outside the military forty years ago are now commonplace in gun shops or the black market.  It's time we make some weapons 'for government and military use only' by restricting the gun's manufacturers from sourcing gun shops with these tools.  Secondly, today's media is much quicker in getting information to the masses.  No longer will a report on the East coast 'make it's way' to the west coast; information exchange is now immediate.  I think there have been tragedies such as throughout civilized (and uncivilized) history.  Try reading the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers if you need proof of man's ability to kill (and many of the killers listed did their dirt long before guns and CNN).  We feel like more people are dying because more people are dying AND we know about it.

Sick of Cowards

I'm tired of it.  I'm tired of these cowards with guns.  I'm sick of these guys who can't handle their own problems so they go into a classroom and shoot folks who have nothing to do with their problems.

6 Killed in Northern Illinois classroom.  For what?  Right now there is no motive.  Will it be the same as the Virginia Tech murders?  'Boo hoo I'm an outcast'.   You know what?  Every single one of us is outcast from something, from someone, from somewhere.  You can't pick the general public as your enemy and start shooting.  Furthermore, if you do, have the fucking guts to stand up to the anger and sadness you so eagerly caused.  Don't kill random folks and then get scared and kill yourself. That's cowardly and a punk way out.   If you're man enough to pick up a gun and shoot innocent people face to face, then be man enough to look those same folks' families in the face and tell them why you took their loved one.  Tell that family that you were trying to get a point across about . . . . what?

You think you'll evoke change by killing random people and then yourself?  What message do you think gets across?  The only message that gets across is that you were a disturbed, mentally immature person who couldn't handle the pressures of growing up/being grown and didn't have the compassion for others to limit the consequences.

In fact, your killing of innocent people only creates martyrs of the people you killed.  We don't remember you when we think of the killing spree, we think of the killed.  I despise that news reports even include your death in the reported number killed.  Your name doesn't belong in the same sentences.

I do not feel pity for your situation of being outcast.  It is not because I don't have compassion for those that are outcast.  It is because I reserve compassion for those that are compassionate enough not to give up and harm or kill other people to get a message across, a lost message.  The second you picked up a gun with intention of killing people you didn't know is the second you gave up any claims of victimhood, of being the abused.

At the point, you became nothing.

Nine Game Road Trip - No Problem

7 up 2 down.  That's a helluva road trip.  Two losses by a combined four points.  Easily winnable games too.  The Lake Show is looking good and this is without young Drew doing his thing in the middle.  Kobe is playing with a newfound youthfulness, happy to be on the court.  Pau Gasol fits in like a lego in seven year old's hand.  Everybody is learning and accepting their roles.....

Things are looking good!

Lakers 105 - Nets 90

Something happened tonite.  A special feeling emerged.  Kobe dropped a solid six points in a win.  That's right, Kobe Bryant scored six points.  Fisher had 24, Pau had 24 and 12 rebounds.  Kobe added eight assists.

But the thing that made this game special was the emotions Kobe showed at the end of the game.  He was downright giddy.  Just happy.  Something we haven't gotten to see from Kobe in quite some time.  And it made me smile...

Who is going to benefit from the Gasol acquisition?  Derek Fisher did tonite.  But on any given night, after the defense focuses on Kobe, then Pau, then Bynum, there is going to be seriously wide open people named Luke, Sashsa, Ronnie, Lamar, Vladimir, Trevor, and Derek.

Great Comment Board Conversations: #1

It's time for a new category on Xpinionated.  I know, I know past features on this blog have often been shortlived.  But you know what, still my blog so read it, comment, and let me do what I does!

The first installment was on this story regarding injury to that guy covering Plaxico Burress on the winning Super Bowl score.

OCleftcoast:  tank, careful, I think I hear a banjo in the background! Yikes!

tankrose:  OCleftcoast, don't be a racist on here. That is not cool! You have no idea what you are talking about!

OCleftcoast:  racist? what are you talking about?

tankrose:  You said you could here a "banjo playing" are you saying that I am a hillbilly. Watch that BLEEP !

OCleftcoast:  no, I was joking about that other guy you told to go clean his fish. C'mon now,

tankrose:  Yeah, sure and if the shoe was on the other foot, then what? I find that offensive! You have no idea what my skin color is and you are saying I am a inbreed, hillbilly. That don't belong here. You want to go there, we can. Lets keep it out of that!

Cubbiesfan93:  Geez tankrose, he wasn't even talking to you. The only reason you should react like that is if you really are a hillbilly.

OCleftcoast:  Tank chill, It was the other guy, his avatar, not you, lighten up!

tankrose:  NO, what I am saying is that kind of BLEEP leads to other BLEEP So lets keep it above that. We anit got to go there. Stay with football! Don't get all racial!

OCleftcoast:  The movie Deliverance, maybe you never saw it! My apologies.

As I was reading this dialogue that had nothing to do with the topic of the story, I couldn't help but wonder how sensitive and/or politically correct tankrose must be.  But then the comedy of this exchange rears it's comical head.  Who knew hillbilly was a race?  And what exactly is the other foot when you call someone a hillbilly?  In fact, for all of his political correctness, tankrose is actually more offensive than any others befuddled by his responses.  tankrose makes several jumps to stereotypical conclusions:  banjo to hillbilly, hillbilly to race(?), hillybilly to inbreed.  Oddly enough, when I read banjo, I too thought 'Deliverance'.

Corporate Twilight Zone

You gotta love the way technology has enriched corporate America.  But there are those times where technology presents an opportunity for stupidity to raise it's misshapen head and attack.  Case in point:

A technical issue regarding how remote users connect to the corporate network has been found.  The IT vendor, obviously in an effort to alleviate concerns, sends a corporate wide email simply stating that they are aware of the problem and working to resolve the issue.  Unfortunately, once you admit that something is broken in corporate America, there are those that feel it is the perfect time to share their own aggravation with the broken issue.  So, these folks start Replying to All  simply to say 'Yeah, it's happening to us in xxxxxxtown too'.  After 10 to 15 emails essentially saying the same thing and being sent to everyone in the entire country, the next wave of folks jump in to say 'Please stop replying to all'.  The irony, these same people trying to curtail the email traffic have hit Reply to All.  In effect, they did what they were telling others not to do which is setting a horrible example.  Though this could have been effective if only a single person does it, alas that it is not the case.  For the next hour, the 'Don't Reply To All' people are bombarding the company with their message while the 'Yeah it's happening to me people' are slowly fading and decreasing their email throughput.  Halfway through this hour, the 'I have a workaround' people start chiming in and yep they are replying to all...

'Tis a vicious circle guaranteed to last at least until lunch time....

Retrospect

What better day than Super Bowl Sunday to consider what could have been in the world of Pigskin Glory?

The Hokies season ended in yet another bowl loss as the Kansas Jayhawks outcoached and out-gameplanned Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Though I still believe the Hokies are the better team per se, the Jayhawks came prepared to do what they needed to do. Virginia Tech, on the other hand, got too cute with their offense, abandoned the run which was the only consistent success they had, and gave up entirely too many third or fourth and short plays.

The Redskins season ended in a playoff loss to Seattle....again. If you recall, the last time the 'Skins made the playoffs, the season went terminal with a loss to the Seahawks. In this game, the 'Skins struggled for the entire first half, made a run to take the lead in the third quarter and early fourth, and let a missed field goal propel Mr. Momentum to the Seahawks bench as they scored 22 straight points to win 35 -14.

With all that said, two very good seasons. An ACC championship and a playoff berth. And with the way Daniel Snyder is handling this head coach search, a playoff berth may not be in the 'Skins new future. The Hokies, meanwhile, will probably be in a slight rebuilding mode as the defense will be losing a few folks. With that said, another ACC championship is not out of the question given the recent mediocrity of the conference as a whole....

Audacity at an extreme

In Haro, Spain, 2004, a 17 year old teenager is killed by a Spanish businessman.  The teen was hit from behind on his bicycle as the businessman sped through some campgrounds.  The teen was dragged for some distance.

A judge ruled that the man had technically committed no crime and as such no criminal charges were filed.  Fast forward to 2006, the businessman decides to sue the parents of the teenage boy.  He claims that they are responsible for the damage done to his Audi A8 and the ensuing car rental fees.  Yes, this man wanted the parents of the child he killed to repay him for his inconvenience!  Never mind that their son is dead.  Never mind that he did not spend a single day in jail though separate experts estimate he was doing 70 to 107 miles per hour...in a 55 mile per hour zone.  No his precious fucking car (excuse the language) needs Maaco and he shouldn't have to pay!  The audacity, cold-heartedness, stupidity, assholedness of this guy!

He has dropped the charges.  However, he did not show up to court fearing the publicity would amount to a public lynching.  Perhaps, a public lynching is what this bunghole truly needs!

Update to my Thirties

On the 22nd, I posted about my worrries concerning my athletic prowess on the hardwood.  Just want to let yall know that I was killin' 'em the rest of the week.  Banking three's (that I called) to win games, steals, blocks, the whole shabang.  My cardio still isn't where I'd like it and I'll be taking some time off due to catching lil man's cold but the John's Creek LA Fitness lunchtime basketball crew has a new found respect for this kid!

Devin's Man Night

Last night, lil Man spent some time with the dudes.  Mrs Xpinionated had to help a friend in need which left Devin alone with me and a couple of friends playing video games.   You know he had to be having a good time because he was sitting in his high chair eating lasagne with his hands in his diaper.  Every man's dream to eat some good pasta in your drawuhs with your hands while watching your friends play video games!!

Later in the night, one of my friends J was shooting Devin's little basketballs (or trying to) into the little goal.  The balls landed over near Devin in the corner and J said 'Devin, get those balls for me.'  Devin looked at him like I know you see me ridin' my zebra!  Then J mimed shooting a basketball and being the smart kid my son is, he got up off the zebra, walked over to the balls, picked both of them up and proceeded to take them to J.  Attaboy!

Oh yeah...check out Devin's new pics with his new haircut!  And first haircut for that matter

Aging

I have been back in the gym for the past week playing basketball Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday last week as well as yesterday.  After yesterday's performance, there are some things that are becoming ridiculously clear to me

  1. The game may have passed me by
  2. My body isn't doing what I tell it to do anymore
  3. My mind doesn't seem to care about number two as much
  4. In my youth, I may have relied heavily on my natural athleticism instead of actual skills.
  5. Number 4 means the game has definitely passed me by
  6. I am taking Aleve before playing basketball hoping to make me knees numb

If I'm not as skilled as I once thought I was and athleticism made me the hardwood threat that I know I once was, what does this mean going forward as my knees and lungs ache every time I play?  I'm hoping the lungs thing is just a matter of getting into shape.  But I fear the knee thing is just from years of hard work.   I don't expect to dunk anymore by any means.  However, now the pains in my knees are in my head.  I don't make the effort to jump unless someone has pissed me off -- after which I revert to my twenties for approximately twenty seconds.

I'm gonna give it another week of strictly ball playing, then I'll alternate day to day between balling and lifting.  Maybe I can get these legs into something they once were.

The Black Notebooks - Inspiration

I haven't used this forum to address race often.  And I honestly don't know if that is intentional or if it has been done unconsciously.  In any case, I am currently reading The Black Notebooks by Toi Derricotte.  It is a book that I've owned for years and have started several times.  For whatever reason, I couldn't get past the introduction.

So I restarted this novel a couple of days ago mainly because I was out of books to read at home.  FINALLY, I got past the introduction and found the book nearly impossible to put down.  It is a collection of written recollections from Derricotte -- who is a black woman of white skin tone able to 'pass' as white.  Oddly enough, she has touched on so many experiences that I have had at one time or another.  Some which make me smile thinking 'I didn't know anyone else felt that way' and others that don't make me smile.

It has encouraged to maybe confront my feelings on race more directly.  I tend to put my feelings about race out in a joking manner.  Almost censoring myself when the topic is brought up outside of the comedic forum.  The thing is that I'm not sure how I feel about race relations as a whole.  If you give me a specific event or situation where race plays a part, I could probably argue until the cows come home.  But generally speaking, it's a bit harder.

Mrs. Xpinionated often hears me say something about how I don't like people.  Sometimes I'm more specific and say I don't like black people, the joke being that I'm black.  Other times, I'll throw other races in there.  It's not that I don't like any particular race, I truly believe everybody gets on my nerves at one point or another.  Again, tying it to race is my defense mechanism of making a joke to either conceal my true feelings or protect the feelings of others -- and I'm not sure which it is.  Mrs. Xpinionated finds it even funnier because strangers seem to talk to me quite often which is unexpected for a person that claims they don't like people.  I guess the truth is I don't like people in general but within that large population of 'general', I am willing to make exceptions for specific individuals....does that make sense?

I digress.  Race has been left out of this blog partly because I sometimes get tired of hearing about it.  Sometimes it's left out because though I feel I want to talk about it, I don't know how to approach.  I don't want to be the victim playing the race card nor do I want to talk as if I'm the voice of black folk everywhere.  Sometimes I don't write because I fear what I write may signal alarms to my white friends and family that I don't want to deal with.  But race is always there with me whether I acknowledge it or not.  And if I start to write about it on this blog, I don't want to censor myself, cleanse myself, or otherwise change my writing so as to not offend.

Derricotte speaks of 'bearing and baring anger' in her writings with regards to race relations among friends of different races.  In brief, in order for any lasting communication to be worthwhile between friends of different races, both parties must be allowed to bare anger as well as both parties must bear anger.  The anger cannot be thought of as a personal insult; rather an accumulation of emotion and experiences that have reached a boiling point.

So I guess that if I plan to get a bit more serious on this blog, especially with the touchy subject of race, I ask that you bare anger when you need to and be willing to bear anger when it comes to that.

Turn of events

In foxsports.com's latest NBA Power Rankings, the Miami Heat are ranked 30th out of 30 teams.  The Los Angeles Lakers are ranked 1st out of 30 teams.  How's that for a 'flip the script' kinda moment?

Pretty Picture

I wanted to simply past a look at the standings here but oh well.  In a nutshell, the Lakers are tied for numero uno in the West with Phoenix, who we've beaten twice already guaranteeing at least a series split.

Enough Oprah!!!

Announced recently, the Discovery Health television network will soon become OWN -- Oprah Winfrey Network.

In my mind, I can't imagine that I am the only person in this entire world that is sick and tired of the constant ego trip that Oprah Winfrey lives.  A magazine featuring her face on every issue.  A school for kids in Africa -- despite the need for such a school in any impoverished area of any metropolis in America -- that bears her name but abuses the kids.  A television talk show that has become predictable in every facet.  And now a television network?!?!

Gimme a break.  Her ego has taken over.  If a sports celebrity, say Michael Jordan, decided to start a book club, open the Jordan Boys and Girls club of Chicago, create Air Magazine with his likeness plastered on the cover every single issue, and buy half of NBA TV so we could watch all Jordan, all the time, I guarantee the critics would be plentiful.  But if Oprah does it, she's just giving back!  Look, the last thing Oprah has ever done was give back.  Oh, it may seem like she's giving back when she gives everyone in the audience a new car (even though technically, I'm sure not a single dime came from her pocket), but the money she made after that news hit the airwaves easily dwarves any 'efforts' on her part.

Well what about the Legends Ball she through not too long ago?  She threw a party for a bunch of famous people!  I threw a party for a bunch of unfamous people and ABC did not want to film it.  Hell, I'm not sure Oprah even deserved to be in that select group of folks.

Oprah is a fraud.  She may be loved by millions but in my mind (and this doesn't make me a hater -- and if it does who cares), she's a fraud.  An ego driven, narcissistic attention-whore.

Deja Vu

Can it possibly happen two years in a row?  At around this time last year, the Lakers were rolling along nicely.  Surprising the NBA by getting off to a pretty quick start.  And then the injury bug.  Fast forward to 2008, Lakers are in everyone's top 5 power rankings.  Things are looking on the up and up.  And then last night, the magnificent season for Andrew Bynum comes to a halt....at least for eight weeks.....as he suffers a knee injury landing on Lamar Odom's foot.

Andrew Bynum's impact on this Lakers team has been huge.  He transformed seemingly over the summer into a bonafide threat -- defensively and offensively.  When the season began, many thought it was just a matter of time before Chris Mihm or Kwame Brown reassumed their role as the starting center.  NOT SO Fast said the young Mr. Bynum.  And now this??

Stupid Lyrics - Hate 'em

Not sure who sings the songs but the chorus is as follows -- roughly

We can go to the tropics, sippin' on coladas, shorty I can take you there

Or we can go the slums, where killers get hung, shorty I can take you there

We can go the slums?  Where killers get hung?  Really?  This is your pick up line, your git r done?  This is why I find myself listening to the blues channel more and more.  I love(d) hip hop.  I have defended it for years against critics and naysayers.  I've spent chunks of money on it.   But when something as idiotically stupid as this (though trivial in the scheme of things) makes a regular playlist, no wonder hip hop receives some many backlashes.

When going to the slums is a way to pick up a female companion, then the (and lord knows I hate to use the following term) 'thug' mentality has gone too far.  It's one thing to glorify ballin', not that I agree with it but I can understand the origins. But to use the slums as a place of luxury instead of as a motivation to succeed, then there's a complete lack of common sense there.

What's happening to our culture?

Jerry Springer's New All Time Low

The title above says a lot. If you've ever seen Jerry Springer, you know there are tons of lows that can be considered for this dubious title. But I am now watching a jilted woman fighting the lover of her baby's daddy. Nothing special right? Yeah, well, the lover has one arm. The prosthetic arm has now fallen off as the one armed lover is on top of the two armed jilt. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the title of the show? 'Hands Down, Our Best Show'.

UPDATE:  The one armed woman is now swinging the prosthetic at her man.  No one is stepping in to stop her.

San Fran Zoo Riot

So I just saw a local news report regarding the lion attack at the San Francisco zoo.  Sad indeed.  Of course, Xpinionated's spin is slightly different.  Listening to the police spokesman, she said that the lion had killed one person was standing over another injured person, and yet another injured zoo visitor lay nearby.  The police. . . .yelled... at the lion as an attempt to get it to leave the injured person it was cowering over alone.  Now, if I'm standing over a body and don't freeze when the police expect me to freeze, I could easily catch three warning shots in the back.   Yet an animal is yelled at.  A wild animal with a history of human attacks is yelled at.  Further proof that this country is more lenient with animals than with humans.....

The State of Kobe Hating

Ya wanna know how bad the Kobe hating has gotten?   Scott Skiles was recently relieved of his duties as the coach of the Chicago Bulls.  A poll by foxsports.com poses the question 'Who is to blame for the Bulls poor season start?  38% say GM Jim Paxson, 27% say Kobe Bryant.   What kind of freaking sense does that make?

Hip Hop Blasphemy

I am about to commit what can probably be considered hip hop blasphemy.  I intend to hurt no one's feelings, nor disrespect the deceased.  If I had any loyal readers, I imagine saying this could spark off a comment fusillade.  Eh, don't have to worry about that though...so here goes.

The Notorious BIG aka Biggie Smalls aka Christopher Wallace was not that great of a rapper.  There I said it.  Let's think about it, he had two albums, both pretty good but both only had one or two songs that can be considered classics.  Further, when you truly listen to his lyrics, he isn't saying much.  Outside of great storytelling, there is no message, no fire, nothing that makes you think 'What did he mean by that?'

Don't get me wrong, I like BIG.  Enjoy his music still.  But I was thinking when I heard Lil Kim or Foxy --one of those hookers -- rap 'Big comes first then the cream comes after.'  And I thought, I don't think Biggie Smalls would make my top 5 Hip Hop hall of fame.

2Pac would be number 1 due to his ability to have a message in his lyrics from 2Paclypse Now all the way to Machiavelli.   Eminem would be number 2 due to raw ability.  I have yet to see Em lose a freestyle battle -- which in my opinion shows much more in terms of lyrical skills.  In the same vein that BIG isn't really saying anything, Em doesn't either.  However, Em says nothing so cleverly ferociously that I can look past the lack of PSA.  Not to mention both 2Pac and EM put out more than two albums.  Slick Rick would represent some of the old school at number 3.  Great storytelling without the use of egregious language or unnecessary sexual references, along with a sense of humor puts MC Ricky D at the three spot.  At number 4, Gangstarr.  Just a personal favorite of mine.  Lyrically capable, independent sound.  Lastly, at number 5, Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody....KRS-One.  The man tells stories, is socially conscious, and has covered years of hip hop without 'getting caught up'.

I think a big factor in BIG's perceived greatness is due to New York's influence on hip-hop.  Though much of hip-hop's origins lie in New York, it's not necessarily the capital of hip-hop anymore.  Nor can any other part of the country claim that title.  Hip Hop has transcended geographical locations.  With that said, the perception of New York as the birth land of rap gives undue credence to anything or anyone coming out of the area.  As such, if Biggie put out the same exact albums and led the same exact life but was from Milwaukee instead of New York, I don't think he'd be thrown in the greatest of all time debate.

Oh well, I added some Technorati tags to see if we can't get some readership and comments going.  Maybe I'll even throw this out on Helium.com

Kobe Happy?

After the turmoil of the Kobe-capades this summer, is Kobe Bryant happy?  It would appear so as the Lakers sit at 15 - 9, fourth in the talented Western conference.

"This [Lakers'] team is the closest I've ever been on," Bryant said. "I feel we have a bond as a group. There are no cliques. We all hang out together. I'm happy with it."

"With trades, you never know what's going to happen," said Bryant, whom Lakers insiders say hasn't mentioned being traded since the Bulls talks ended. "I'm happy to be playing and not caught up in the business. It becomes too difficult for me to be involved. I don't have that great education, so I can't handle that type of stuff. My high school education just can't get it done."

As you may remember, a certain Lakers fan stated that should the Lakers get off to a good start, perhaps Mamba would change his tune.  I don't want to jinx anything and Kobe may not have changed his tune entirely, but he has muted it for the time being!

--

In other observations, I haven't been able to see as many games this year due to circumstances but looking at the box scores I can't but be happy about Sasha's progress this season.  In fact, big kudos to our entire bench and all the youngsters showing up in ways bigger than expected.  Baby boy Bynum is doing his part to prove that Lakers management got it right by keeping him.  Turiaf continues to bring the necessary energy to bring life to the game at any given moment.  Farmar continues to improve, D. Fish leads by example, and V.Rad is playing like we expected when he was acquired.

Getting excited.....

Best Thing About the Denver Game

Allen Iverson scorched us for 51 points in a loss last night and he reminded me of how he was back when we were in high school at Bethel.  Unstoppable.  But this ain't the high school game, one man doesn't often win a game in the NBA and such was the case last night.  The Lakers won 111-107.  Bigger than the team victory is the fact that we have already won the season series with Denver should that come into play for playoff seeding.

BCS Respect Waning, Waning, Woeful

LSU will be taking on Ohio State in the National Championship game this year.  This is what the BCS system has come up.  These teams are considered the best that this country has to offer.

Of course, if any of you reading this have perused before, you know that I'm partial to Virginia Tech, being an alum and all.  I spent a good part of yesterday watching my Redskins give up a heartbreaker (17-16) to the Bills; but in the back of my mind, I was slowly trying to build a case for why the Hokies have earned (a key word here) a chance to play for the big pretty sparkly football.  By the time, the BCS Selection had started, I had actually convinced myself, or maybe just got my hopes up really really high, that the 'experts' would see that Va Tech is as deserving of a National Championship if not more so.

Needless to say, I was disappointed.  At first, it was just disappointment born of my own blown-out-of-proportion hopes.  Then the internet trolling began....what's that you say?   The computers have ranked Virginia Tech first in 4 out of 6 computer tallies?  But the humans showed no love, no respect?  Disappointment has slowly marinated into anger at this point.

So let's go through some things in regards to Va Tech's argument to be in the National Championship game -- and what better place to start with than our two losses.

@ #2 LSU - Week 2 - LSU soundly beat the Hokies 48-7.  There is no denying that.  The Hokies came in with an inexperienced and injury riddled offensive line, a qb with growing confidence but easily rattled, and an atmosphere rarely replicated anywhere else.  The perfect storm for just such a blowout.  Given that, the Tigers may have played their best game this year that night.  That, for all the talk of SEC superiority, has been their statement game this season.  They have simply looked like a good to very good team since that game.   Virginia Tech has improved week in and week out.   An early season loss is rarely used as the validation for keeping a team out of the national title hunt...but this year, as I will soon prove, is all the human voters have.

@ #2 BC - Week 8 - The Boston College Eagles strode into Lane Stadium as one of the hottest teams in the country.  For 53 minutes and 59 seconds, the Virginia Tech Hokies put them in their place.  A breakdown physically, mentally, and strategically led to a 14 - 10 loss to BC at Lane Stadium.  Though an interesting game, what is more interesting is the number of stories last week -- before the ACC Championship game, a rematch of BC-VT -- that made note of the implications of that game.  Essentially, had VT won that rainy Thursday night, the ACC Championship game would have been VT playing to get in the National Championship game.  With that being said, the Hokies showed that they were indeed better than Boston College with a win in the ACC Championship game.

So that begs the question:  If Va Tech would have been in the Championship  game if they had won in October and they avenged that loss in the Conference title game, why exactly are they not going to the National Championship game?  Ah, the answer lies in hypocrisy my dear fellow.  Apparently, simple logic is not at play.  If you say a win at BC in mid-season is enough to make you forgot a week 2 loss, then it would be fair to say that a win against BC in a title game should make the pollsters forget about a week 2 loss, correct?  Chew on that, I'ma move on.

OSU vs LSU -  I firmly believe neither of these teams deserve this shot.  LSU has been ranked number one twice this season and managed to lose that standing twice -- including once to an unranked team.  Do you think pollsters would be as sympathetic to a team they hadn't picked as their preseason favorite?  LSU is a remarkably talented team.  But let's face it, they haven't gotten any better since that week in September.  And quite frankly, they've been pretty lucky a few times as well.  OSU, well, I hate to join the cacophony of Buckeyes haters, but their strength of schedule is ridiculously unimpressive.  I know I know, they should be penalized because other members of their conference can't keep up.  But what about their non-conference slate:  Youngstown St, Akron, Wash, and Kent State.  I hear you Bucks fans with the 'they schedule years in advance'.  But be real with yourselves, years ago your athletic director knew that Youngstown (Div I AA), Akron, and Kent State were not going to be powerhouses!  And quite frankly, with a loss to an unranked Illini team, I'm not sure you earned a trip to the big one.  Who is your keynote win?  Where was your statement game?

And LSU fans, for all the talk of SEC superiority, LSU's opponents' win - loss record (91 wins to 67 losses) is exactly one game better than VT's (90 wins to 68 losses).  And the Ohio State university can't even be included in this analysis as their opponents win-loss tally is 73 - 71 -- and that includes Div I AA Youngstown State's 7-4 mark which means your DIV I win-loss ratio would 66 wins to 67 losses.

So with all that said, who do I think should be in the National Championship game?  I believe it should be Virginia Tech vs Oklahoma.  I am a fan of winning your conference championship in order to play for a National championship. It's as simple as that.  There's the ACC, SEC, Big 12, and some smaller conferences with the courage to have their conference champion be declared on a neutral field.  LSU reppin' the SEC is out for reasons stated above.  That leaves Va Tech and the Sooners to battle it out.

Outside looking in?

image Congratulations to the 2007 ACC Champion Virginia Tech Hokies.  The Hokies, playing for the ACC crown for the third time in their four year membership of the ACC, defeated the Boston College Eagles 30 - 16 in what many of us in the Hokie family considered a revenge game.  Earlier in the season, BC completed in improbable Thursday night comeback to beat Tech in the 'burg 14 - 10.  As the Tech mantra was for the entire week -- 'A minor setback for a major comeback' -- the Hokies showed heart and determination after being manhandled for much of the first half.

From a broader perspective, VT had a slim, very very slim, chance at possibly playing in the National Championship.  All they needed was for #1 Missouri to lose to favorite #9 Oklahoma, #2 West Virginia to lose to unranked and lowly Pitt, and, to a smaller extent, Tennessee to upset #7 LSU......we got two out of three.  Missouri was no match for Oklahoma for the second time this season.  West Virginia scored it's lowest total of the season in an embarrasing 13 - 9 loss to the 4 or 5 win Panthers in the Backyard Brawl.  LSU did beat Tennessee, but not nearly as convincingly as some would have thought.

So now we have a conundrum in the BCS.  Most do not dispute Ohio State getting in.  They are #3 with a fairly weak schedule and one loss as the only real chink in their armor.  After that, the picture gets pretty muddy.  Georgia as the number 4 team is hoping the BCS operates as it has promoting in a direct line which would make them number 2.  I oppose that not only because I'm not a Georgia fan, but also because they didn't win their division much less their conference.  Of course, the more bullheaded Dawgs fans claim they were 'co-champions' of their division, a joke to all but UGA fans.  So after number 4, you have Kansas.  Kansas was a surprise one loss team this year, although once they played a reputable team they were not nearly as successful. Also, no conference or even division championship for Kansas.  Though there is no specific rule that says a team must win it's conference in order to play for a National Championship, I personally feel that a National champion that doesn't win their conference cheapens the whole process.  Many folks argue that there have been Super bowl champions that didn't win their conference -- but they have a playoff!  After Kansas, we have the Hokies.  Conference champions.  Two losses both to teams ranked number two in the country at the time the game was played.  The real chink in our armor is the 48-7 loss to LSU early in the second week of the season.  It was a horrible loss, but we are nothing like that team in September.  In fact, I would love the chance to play LSU again, especially in a neutral site.  Speaking of LSU, their are the layman's pick to jump to number two.  Given that they won their conference, and have only lost games in multi-OT games many believe they should catapult to the number two spot.

I believe it should be either LSU or VT.  Trying to be objective, I understand that LSU has had the tougher schedule and they did beat Va Tech -- in Death Valley on a Saturday Night; one of the toughest venues in the country.  However, LSU also lost to unranked Arkansas (last week!) and a Kentucky team that didn't pan out as being as good as originally thought.  Virginia Tech, on the other hand, has lost to BC in a nail biter that they easily should have won.  In fact, if not for a complete meltdown in the last 6 minutes of that game, Virginia Tech could likely be looking at a number one or two ranking...no controversy.    If shoulda coulda woulda......In any case, Kansas and Georgia with no conference championship to their names, should not be playing in the National Championship.

Handed to us

The Jazz handed us our asses last night.  52 points in the paint -- at halftime.  Yeah, the Lakers had 51 points total at halftime.  Every loose ball, every rebound, every bounce went their way.  Out-hustled, out-played, and out-skilled.  My hats off to the Jazz for their play.

Now, you know I wasn't going to post without some kind of complaint about last night.  After all, I usually post when something's bothering me.  The Jazz fans booed Derek Fisher last night.  I'm assuming they felt slighted that D.Fish wanted out of his contract with Utah over the summer.  Normally, booing a player asking to be released would be acceptable.  But Fish didn't leave because of normal player boohooing - he left to find better care for his daughter.  How a group of fans can put their basketball team -- their title-less basketball team (not that that makes a difference, just an opp for a cheap shot; like the one Jazz fans delivered last night) -- above a player caring for his daughter is beyond me.

The Revenge Factor

How much will revenge play in Saturday's upcoming ACC Championship game?  If a single onside kick is recovered, Virginia Tech would very likely be playing for a right to go to the National Championship right now.  How's that for motivation?
NBA Power Rankings Week Of 01/15/2008
Rk Team Last Wk Rise/Fall High/Low Comment
1 Lakers 7 (+6) 1/15 (26-11) Will Kwame Brown pick up the slack during Andrew Bynum’s absence? Don’t count on it. Count on Kobe to start scoring 35 per night – or more, like the 48 he dropped Monday on Seattle.

2 Hornets 5 (+3) 2/19 (25-11) They’ve won seven straight on the road. Imagine how good they'd be if they enjoyed an actual home-court advantage.
